Marian E. Ulmer

July 31, 1931- January 21, 2017

Marian Elizabeth Ulmer returned to be with our Heavenly Father at the age of 85 on January 21, 2017.

Marian McClaughry was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois, she and husband Richard Ulmer were called to Aliceville, Kansas, where he was the sole teacher at a Lutheran grade school. They were blessed with three children in Kansas – Richard Jr., Kathie and Kristine.

The family then moved to Yorktown, Iowa, where Richard Sr. was principal of St. Paul Lutheran School. In Yorktown, she was blessed with three more children – Karen, Karol and Karla – and survived a killer tornado that devastated the town. The Ulmers’ final move was to Omaha in 1967, to St. Paul Lutheran School and Church, where Marian remained a member until death.

In 1971, Marian made international news when she was transported on a toboggan through a blizzard for the birth of her seventh child, Mark. Marian served St. Paul as Kindergarten teacher as well as preschool and Kindergarten teacher at two other Omaha-area churches. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, decorating and anything which required creativity. Perhaps her greatest testament is her loving family.

Marian is survived by husband Richard and children Karla Haggar, Karen Samson, Karol Ulmer and Kathie Wolfert, all of Omaha; as well as Kris Hock of Arvada, Colorado and Richard Ulmer Jr. of San Francisco. She is also survived many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marian was preceded in death by son Mark, in 1986.
