We honor Jadwiga who was a beloved Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother and Sister. Jadwiga was born in Zhytomyr, Ukraine as the 10th child of Kamil and Yulianna (Julia) Zmiewski. The eldest six children had previously perished during Stalin’s forced starvation of Ukraine known as Holodomor (1932-1933). The family fled Ukraine to Germany during WWII, circa 1942. As a young girl growing up in Germany, Jadwiga had prayed to God to come to America. That prayer was answered when Kamil and Yulianna brought Jadwiga and her two younger brothers to America in 1952 when she was 16 years of age. They traveled by boat arriving in New York City, living for a short time in New Jersey. They then settled in Lincoln, Nebraska, where Jadwiga met her Husband, Aleksander Jurys, marrying in 1953. Aleks and Jadwiga moved to Kansas City, Kansas where they had their oldest child, Mary. They returned to Nebraska in 1956 settling in Omaha where the younger four children were born, Katherine, Anna, Alex and John. Aleks, Jadwiga, along with their three youngest teenage children, moved to Northglenn, Colorado, in 1976 when Aleks received a work transfer. Jadwiga returned to the Omaha area in 2014 after Aleksander passed away in 2010.
