6/7/1927 – 10/15/2015

Ed Schewe age 88 of West Des Moines, IA, passed away on Thursday after a courageous 15 year battle with Alzheimer’s.  He was born June 7, 1927 in Omaha, Nebraska to Otto H. and Alma B. Schewe.  March 11, 1950, he married Elaine E. Blackman in Plattsmouth, NE.  He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church and later became a member of Lutheran Church of the Master both in Omaha, Nebraska.

He graduated in 1945 from Omaha Technical High School.  Ed reached a long time goal in 1994 graduating from the University of Nebraska at Omaha with a Bachelor of General Studies Degree.  He valued the importance of an education and was the first in his family to hold a college degree.

He loved the world of business, had an incredible work ethic and respected the gains earned from hard work and frugality.  Ed and Irv took over the operation of Standard Iron Works after the unexpected death of their father.  During WWII, he joined the Navy  Seabees  and served most of his time in Guam.  Ed and his brother, Irv, owned  Standard Iron Works in Omaha, NE for 42 years, later getting involved in land development and commercial properties around the Omaha area.

Family was very important to Ed and his entire life was devoted to the well-being of his wife, three daughters and grandchildren.  Ed enjoyed watching his daughters play slow-pitch softball. Ed was, of course, a Big Red football fan.  He helped serve the community through his service on the Mid-City Bank board and was also a member of the Masonic Order.

Ed leaves Elaine, his wife of more than 65 years, three daughters Joyce (Chuck) Hart, Margaret (Roger) Langpaul,  Vivian (Kelly) Johansen, grandchildren Clinton Hart, Jessica (Hart) Stephens, Christopher Langpaul, Alexander Langpaul, Erik Johansen and Lora Johansen, great-grandchildren Kellyn and Colvin Hart, Olivia and Alaina Stephens, Ella and Katherine Langpaul, brother Irvin (Marilyn) Schewe, sister Lucille Mae Schewe.  He was preceded in death by his father, mother and grandson Ryan Langpaul.

A Memorial Service will be held at Roeder Mortuary 108th Street Chapel on Thursday October 22 at 11:00 A.M. Private family interment. In lieu of flowers, memorials to the Alzheimer’s association.
