Katherine Maria Green

By | Uncategorized | 14 Comments

Katherine Maria Green was born the 5th of six girls (and an infant brother) to Elijah and Dora Johnson on December 16th, 1928. Early on Katherine had a love for education and English. She did so well in school she skipped the third grade. She went on to graduate from Omaha Technical High School in 1945. She had aspirations of becoming a registered nurse; however, the initiative for the RN program ended due to the end of the war effort and she was unable to pursue that goal. Katherine then began her career working as a housekeeper. She went on to work for Douglas County Hospital and in 1960 began work at the U.S. Postal Service where she worked for 31 years. She retired from the post office in 1992 and discovered that work was her hobby. She returned to work for 13 more years at the Red Cross.

Katherine was an avid reader. If she wasn’t reading a book she could be found reading the newspaper or studying her Bible and Sunday School lessons. She was a Jeopardy enthusiast and a huge fan of Wheel of Fortune. She also enjoyed sports of every kind.

Katherine was a fan-tastic cook! People everywhere enjoyed her Thanksgiving dressing, one of her specialties. Others of her specialties include: macaroni and cheese, scalloped potatoes, sweet potatoes, greens, fried, baked, and barbeque chicken, pies, and cakes including pineapple upside down cake, German-chocolate cake, and 7-up cake and a myriad of other dishes.

Katherine was a member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church before they erected the facility on John Creighton Blvd. She was a faithful member and servant of the Mt. Nebo Sunday School, Missions Guild, and Usher Board and served in various capacities over the years. Katherine was involved in the Urban League Guild as well as other civic groups.

She was a lover of humanity. She went out of her way to help others and extend opportunities to them. She lived by The Golden Rule: Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.

She was preceded in death by her parents; five sisters: Carrie, Helen, Emma, Mary, and Lillian; one infant brother; children: David Eugene Green and Sharon Lynne Green. She is survived by son, Michael Leroy Green, daughter-in-law, Sharon Patricia Green, and daughter, Lisa Joyce (Conway) Green; fourteen grandchildren; 28 great grand-children; and 2 great-great grandchildren, and a host of other family, friends, and loved ones.

Entered into her heavenly home with her husband and only daughter by her side. She was born in Omaha to Richard McGraw and Donaldine Warrington. She graduated from Omaha Technical High School in 1951, where she was very involved in journalism and music. She took her training as a registered nurse at the Nebraska Medical Center, and later earned her Masters Degree in Counseling/Administration at the then Omaha University. She began her nursing career at University Hospital supervising the male medicine ward. She then teamed with Minnie Schaeffer to establish Booth Memorial Hospital serving geriatric patients. After the birth of her daughter, wanting to be home during the day, she returned to University Hospital working nights in the Emergency Room. In 1966 she joined the Omaha Public Schools as a school nurse. During her time in the schools, she served students at Laura Dodge Elementary, Morton Junior High School, and Technical High School. Readily recognized for her leadership qualities, she was promoted to be the assistant to Rena Mae Gibson, the Supervisor of Health Services. Upon Miss Gibson’s retirement, she assumed the duties of Supervisor of Health Services until her retirement in 1991. During her tenure she was best known for her strong support of increased nursing services in the schools, and the development of the first OPS Sex Education Program. Her faith was a large part of her life and she was very involved in her church. She sang in the choir; taught Sunday School, especially loving the pre-schoolers; and was active in the Women’s Ministries. She loved to travel and attending the opera. Hers was a life of generosity. She enjoyed crafts and baking, especially when she was making something for someone else. She and her husband were responsible for the table decorations for the welcoming dinners held by their church’s Alpha Outreach Ministries program. She enjoyed entertaining and hosted an annual tea for her nurses, the family Christmas gathering, and the annual family picnic. Church missionaries were always welcome in her home during their respite in Omaha.
