Mother’s mom passed away when she was three so since her father was an engineer with the railroad she stayed with her grandparents on their dairy farm until starting school in 1925. She then lived with her aunt Opal in New Buffalo until her father remarried (Ema Rhoder) in 1928.

As a child she enjoyed helping her grandmother churn butter.

As a teenager her chores involved driving the tractor to cultivate & maintain the 40 acre apple / peach orchard

At age 14 she got her driver’s license and drove until 2005, age 85. During those 71 years, she received only one ticket.

She graduated New Buffalo Consolidate High in 1937. After graduation she moved to Decatur Nebraska where she stayed with a cousin until finding a job as a live in nanny.

In 1940 at the age of 20, she moved to Omaha and worked at Herbs Tavern as a cook’s assistant. After a short time, moved to the night shift as head cook. Some nights after closing they would go out & party till 4am then have breakfast at the Castle Hotel.

She started her floral design career in 1946 at House of Flowers in Florence. She worked there until 1957 when she started at Dundee Florist. In 1980 she left Dundee to work at Hilltop Green House until she retired in 1986. She then worked part time from 1986 — 2003 at Gullottas Florist. During those 57 years she attended various FTD workshops for continuing education in places like Michigan State University, Oregon & Florida.

She also worked on the Los Angeles City float for the 1988 Rose Parade.

She did a lot of freelancing, like the weekly flowers for American Lutheran Church from 1972 to its closing in 1997 and then Bethel Lutheran Church from 1998 — 2005. She also freelanced over 50 weddings starting with her sons in 1979 and ended with her granddaughters in 2011 which she referred to as her Swan Song.

She was a den mother when I was in Cub Scouts and continued to be active while I was in the Boy Scouts. She also had an Exploring Unit. Taught Sunday School and Baptismal Ministry at Bethel Lutheran Church. She was a Chauffer for her grandson’s football and soccer practices and granddaughter’s cheerleading practices.

Preceded in death by: Parents, Husband: Duane Sr. (1965) and Daughter-in-law: Mary Woodman (2000).

Survived by: Son and Daughter-in-law: Duane and Patti Woodman, Grandchildren: Patrick Woodman of Council Bluffs, IA, Paul Woodman of Omaha, NE, Valerie and Jonathan Albright of Bennington, NE, Julie and Scott Queen of Fremont, NE, Kristy and Chad Lenker of Phillipsburg, KS, Katie and John James of Carrier, OK, Jesse and Stephanie Pfortmiller of Phillipsburg, KS, and Michelle Pfortmiller of Omaha, NE, Great-Grandchildren: Silas, Ayiana and Rayne Woodman, Bailey and Braden Albright, Anthony Queen, Paige James, Josh Lenker, Joeli James, Aaron Lenker, Pacey, Aidan and Tyson Queen, Reid, Reese and Rubi Pfortmiller, Charlotte Johnson and Blake Johnson Jr. and many other family and friends.

C. Joan Hilts, 76, of Omaha, NE, passed away peacefully on Sunday, September 17, 2017 at the Dougherty Hospice House in Sioux Falls, SD after a two year battle with pancreatic cancer. Her funeral service will begin at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, September 22, 2017 at Christ Community Church, 404 S. 108th, Omaha, NE 68154. Visitation on Thursday, September 21, 2017 will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. at the Roeder Mortuary 108th Chapel, 2727 N. 108, Omaha, NE 68164

Carol Joan Lewis was born on February 25, 1941, in Sioux City, Iowa, the daughter of Charles A. and Meredith M.(Anderson) Lewis.  She was the first of four children with siblings, Kay and Kenneth (twins) and brother, Robert (Bob) Lewis. She was raised in Sioux City, married to Terry Hilts and raised her family there. In 1983, she moved to Omaha, NE, and worked for thirty-two years at Nebraska Methodist Hospital and Health System, and at Nebraska Methodist College. She retired in February of 2014, but went back to the college to work on occasion and as needed, until the summer of 2015.

Joan has been a devoted member of Christ Community Church since September of 2001, and made a conscious decision to profess her faith in her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ, and asked for forgiveness of sin by being re-baptized on September 28, 2003. She has loved praising our Lord as a member of the Christ Community Church choir. She was a former member of the Omaha Chapter of Sweet Adelines, currently, Acappella Omaha,and she has also participated in the Omaha Music Circle. Traveling has also been a joy. She especially loved Siesta Key Beach, FL, and the Gulf Coast of Florida, where she vacationed many times with family and friends. She has enjoyed scrapbooking photos and other memories for family and friends, and researching her family genealogy. On one very special trip,  she joined her cousin, Tom Bloxham and his wife, Betsy, along with her brother, Ken, his wife, Pam Lewis, as they traveled to Denmark to see where their great-grandfather and great-grandmother Anderson were born and lived before they came to the United States in the 1800s. It was truly a trip of a lifetime.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Bob.

Joan is survived by her loving family, her son, Mark (Teresa) Hilts of Sioux City, IA; her daughters, Diane (Richard) Nyalka of Rotonda West, FL; and Susan (Mike) Kahler of Dell Rapids, SD; her grandchildren, Matt (Britni) Hilts; Eric (Jen) Hilts; Allison (Vince)  Mathis; Jared (Ashley) Brown; Amanda Kahler; Nic Kahler; step-grandchildren, Dan (Nichole) Nyalka; and Renee (Brian) McVey; great-grandchildren, Philip Hilts; Madison Hilts; Ethan Hilts; Aiden Mathis; Simon Hilts; Samuel Hilts; Morgan Nyalka; Jocelyn McVey; Grady Nyalka; Aria Mathis; Jayce Brown; and Colin McVey; her sister, Kay Tabscott of St. Louis, MO; her brother, Ken (Pam) Lewis of Cedar Rapids, IA; and her many special cousins, nieces and nephews and extended special friends and Sisters and Brothers in Christ.

Of Ralston, survived by Frances Denise Lueders, 82 passed away September 14, 2017.  Fran was born to Mary Bramble on May 22, 1935 and was later  adopted to Harley and Lela Miller of Anita, Iowa.  Fran married  Ron Lueders on March 26, 1976, and lived in Omaha for 41 years.  Fran’s passions were her flowers, garden and cooking.  If you  visited, you never left empty handed or with an empty stomach.

Of Omaha – Gregory was born July 12, 1981 to Gregory T. Robinson and Deborah K. Ricks in Omaha, NE. Gregory was later blessed with his step-father Robert L. Dunn who loved and helped raise him as his own.

Gregory grew up to be a sweet, loving, kind hearted young man with a sense of humor to light up a room. At an early age, Gregory accepted Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Gregory attended and graduated from North High School in 1999. After high school, Gregory began working at Target, Coastal Environmental, Asphalt Maintenance and later became the caregiver of his fiancé, Tonya. Gregory met Tonya in 2003, who became the love of his life and they remained together for 14 years.

Gregory was the life of every party. No matter where he was, he made sure to have fun and enjoy his time with everyone in his presence. Gregory found peace and enjoyment with many things, one of which was keeping the peace. He also enjoyed old school cars, and watching or attending WWE. But most of all, Gregory loved spending time with his family and friends

of Omaha – Jessie James Sullivan was born November 16, 1945 in Parkin, Arkansas to the late James Oliver & Lillie Bell (Wilson) Sullivan. He departed this life on Saturday, September 9, 2017 at 1:40 AM in Omaha, Nebraska.

Jessie moved to Omaha in 1973 and was a retired construction worker.

In June of 1971, Jessie married Lucy (Vinson) Sullivan and to this union 3 children were born: Gary Sullivan, Jessie Jr., and Latashia Sullivan.

Jessie leaves to mourn his passing, his wife of 46 years Lucy; Son Gary (Kellie) Sullivan; Daughter Latashia; 7 brothers; 14 grandchildren; and 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by Son Jessie, Jr.

Dr. Kenneth Alford Harman

Ken Harman was born to Otto and Lula Harman on February 3^rd, 1928, in Burke, South Dakota and died in Omaha, September 15, 2017, at the age of 89. He is survived by his wife of 67 years Jo Harman, daughter Bobbie Allgood (Rick), and sons Rich Harman (Kim) and Tom Harman (Linda), eleven grandchildren and four great grandchildren.

Upon graduation from Burke South Dakota High School in 1946, he enlisted in the US Navy and served from 1946 until 1948 on the USS Vermillion and USS New Kent.

He attended the South Dakota School of Mines and Creighton University graduating from Creighton Dental School with a degree in dental science and later received a master’s degree in orthodontia from University of Nebraska Dental School. He practiced dentistry in Valentine, Nebraska for nine years and orthodontics in Omaha for thirty-two years during which time he also served as a clinical professor at the Creighton and University of Nebraska Dental Schools.

Katherine Jo Tibbs was born March 20,1949 to Willa Mae Crawford Hill and Bernard Lee Hill Jr in Omaha Ne. She was baptized at an early age and loved the Lord. She is preceded by the love of her life Larry R Tibbs. Katherine worked as a Head start Bus Driver and Supervisor for FBG services for many years. She was very creative and always engaging in new art projects. Her music was her calm to any storm. If you knew Katherine you knew she loved family and her faithful dog Pella. Katherine aka Kappy Jo or Kathy was one you never had to worry where you stood in her life because she would tell you. She was one you could talk with, cry with, and laugh with.
