Carl R. Ostrom

7/1/1936 – 5/13/2017

Omaha – Carl Richard Ostrom, age 80, passed away while in the care of family and the staff at Brookestone Village. He was the son of Carl E. Ostrom and Anna Polson. Carl graduated from Omaha North High School, and was stationed on the DMZ in South Korea for the U.S. Army.   He received a Bachelor’s Degree in Engineering & Business from UNO, and a Master’s of Engineering Degree from the Valmont Engineering & Technology Center.  Carl worked 30+ years at Valmont Industries in Research & Development before retiring in 1999. A key development he championed while at Valmont was the irrigation corner system which increased farming yields by 25% and contributed to the feeding of the world.

Carl is preceded in death by Parents: Carl & Anna Ostrom; Sister: Donna Bolton; Brother-in-Law: Byron Young; Survived by Wife of 57 years: Dolores “Dee Dee”; Son: Michael Ostrom (Kristin); Daughters: Kathy Payn (Jeff), Laura Hadwiger (Bruce); Grandchildren: Josh Ostrom, Matt Friedman, Liz Hadwiger, Kyle Hadwiger; Sister: Beverly Young; Brother-in-Law: Dick Bolton; Sister-in-Law: Carol Scheerbaum; Treasured nieces, nephews, & friends.

A devoted family man, Carl was dedicated and most loyal to his wife, Dolores. Carl and Dolores were married for 57 years and lived in the family home for almost all that time. His children, Michael, Kathy and Laura, and their families, brought him much joy and happiness.

Carl enjoyed many hobbies over the years, including piloting his Cessna, racing motorcycles, shooting skeet, fishing, hunting, and assembling electronics. He was an avid problem solver, able to quickly size up a solution after a quick review of a perplexing situation.

The family home was full of love and bustling with activity. Carl was the handyman-in-chief, with an ability to improve and repair almost anything. Carl’s father, Carl E., owned an Auto Repair Shop where “Sonny” began developing his amazing mechanical aptitude. Carl was the architect and designer of a custom kitchen remodel, unique backyard deck and many other projects over the years.

Many long family road trips were inspired by Sonny, typically involving beautiful lakes, fishing and visits to out of state family members. On these trips, Carl was the leader of the pack, driving the entire distance and doing his best to keep peace in the back of the station wagon. The family always went home with special memories. As best as we understand it, Carl is now on a trip of peace and love, hopefully with his Mother, Father, Sister Donna, Brother-in-Law Byron and other dear family and friends that have left this beautiful Earth earlier. He will be greatly missed.

Richard P. Halvorson

Dick was born in Arlington, South Dakota and raised on a farm near Sinai, South Dakota. He received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from South Dakota State University.

He served in the Army as a First Lieutenant. Following his active service, he continued to serve in the reserves. He’s shared many of his experiences from living on the farm and his time in the service, with his grandchildren through his weekly “Papa Notes,” which he faithfully mailed to each grandchild every week. One story he shared, told of leaving Seattle and going to Japan on a ship while serving in the Army. His troops were all lined up, getting ready to board the ship. They could see a ship, a luxury cruise liner, with Army nurses boarding. It was a bit of a disappointment when they were directed to a smaller troop carrier on the other side of a warehouse. His weekly Papa Notes are treasured, not only by his grandchildren, but also by his children, who had the pleasure of reading them.

Dick is preceded in death by his parents, Paul and Ida Halvorson, and his little sister, Gloria Faith. He is also preceded in death by his sister-in-law, Sonja Halvorson and brother-in-law, Wayne Rasmuss. He is survived by wife, who was blessed by his love for 60 years, Julie, his children Paul (Stephanie), David (Suzanne), Susan Groff (Scottie) and Doug, his grandchildren, Kyle (Allison), Jesse Groff, Lyndsi, Jennifer, Boman Groff, Ryan (Kyra), Lauren, Karl, Erik, Skyler Groff and Isaac Groff. Dick was able to meet his first great-grandchild, Dawson just two weeks ago. He is also survived by his sister, Grace Wangberg (John), brothers, Bob Halvorson (Frieda) and Jim Halvorson, brother-in-law Bob Christensen (Linda) and sister-in-law, Paula Rasmuss. He is also survived by 15 nieces and nephews.

Dick was a devoted member of the Gideons, faithfully sharing God’s word. He was also an active member of several other organizations including SCORE (Service Core of Retired Executives) where he held various offices including Chairman and traveled with SCORE to Russia and the Ukraine to assist companies. He was also active in the Rotary and the Nebraska Business Development Center Board of Advisors.

Dick’s life will be remembered as a loving example of his faith, love of family, courage, determination and ability to always smile and not complain even when suffering.

His life will be celebrated at a gathering of family and friends at Roeder Mortuary, 2727 N 108th Street, Omaha, Nebraska from 5-7 on Tuesday, May 16, 2017. Memorials and remembrances will be shared. The service will be at 10am at Lutheran Church of the Master, 2617 S 114th St. (114th and Center). Memorials can be directed to the American Cancer Society (https://www.cancer.org/involved/donate/memorial-giving.html), the Gideons (www2.gideons.org/donate), or Luther Church of the Master (churchofthemaster.com).
