Charles “Charlie” Kimes

By March 18, 2017Uncategorized

6/7/1929 – 3/11/2017

Charles Kimes was born June 7, 1929 in Winona, Mississippi to Frank and Viola (Elmore) Kimes.   “Charlie” was one of twelve children.

He learned the value of hard work from his father and his mother exemplified faith and prayer in their home.  Charles accepted Christ at an early age.   He worked hard to support his family first in Louisville Kentucky and then later in Durant Mississippi.

Charles eventually worked his way to Omaha, Nebraska in the mid-1960s on the invitation of his brother Samuel, who was serving in the U.S. Air Force.  He worked as a machinist with Vickers Inc., but during times of layoffs, he held a variety of other jobs to support his family.  He finally retired from Vickers after 28 years of service.  Not being one to ever sit still, he immediately began a second career as a Westlake Hardware Sales Associate.  He even had a hauling business, so in addition to providing for his family, he helped other families move their households.

Charles found abundant joy in church service.  He faithfully served as a Deacon, van driver, Men’s Ministry member, and wherever or however, he was needed at Pilgrim Baptist Church.  He loved his PBC family and they equally loved him.

His past times included maintaining his home and yard, cultivating his vegetable garden, and fixing vehicles of any make and model.

He was very special and very unique.  Charles was consistently patient and kind to whomever he came in contact with.  He didn’t hesitate to offer an encouraging word or share a laugh.

Charles married Lillian Anthony in 1963.  They celebrated their Golden Anniversary in November 2013 shortly before Lillian’s passing.

God saw fit to call him home on March 11, 2017 to be reunited with his wife, parents, brothers, sisters, and other family members who have gone before him.

He will be sadly missed by four sons:  Eddie Charles (Violeta) Kimes, Larry Kimes, Charles (Valeria) Smith and Cedric (Traci) Kimes; four daughters:  Brenda Marshall, Joyce Ann (Nicholas) Wright, LaSonia Kimes, & Felicia (Joe) Richardson; brother Samuel Kimes of Durant, MS and Sister Flora Bailey of Louisville, KY, grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

Very special thanks to Sis Barbara Smith, Louis Richardson, Winston Lee and their families.  We will always appreciate the services of MOBY Transit, DCI – Dialysis Center 33rd and Dodge.

You may pick up the paper and read that Charles Kimes is dead.  Don’t you believe a word of it, I was born in the flesh in 1929 – I was born in the Spirit in 1941.  What’s born of the flesh will die.  But what’s born of the spirit will live forever.

Visitation Friday 6:00 – 8:00 PM at Roeder Mortuary 4932 Ames Avenue Omaha, Nebraska; Funeral Service 9:00 AM Saturday (3/18/2017) at Pilgrim Baptist Church 2501 Hamilton Street Omaha, Nebraska; Interment Mount Hope Cemetery Omaha, Nebraska

Deacon Kimes will be missed. He has always been a guiding light to display how men should handle themselves in this world. Through his influences his legacy will live on far past his physical time. I hope to pass a little bit of what I learned from watching Deacon Kimes on to the next generation (I can only hope to be as good of a man as he). Thank you for your grace and kindness! My thoughts and prayers are with the entire Kimes family. God bless you all!

    To the Kimes family,
We never look forward to these times of our life. One always hopes and prays that our loves will never have to suffer. We never know what tomorrow will bring, but Joy always comes in the Morning. The short time that I got to know Daddy Kimes he marveled me with the love of his wife and family. He was someone who’s courage I wish I had and strength and Love of God that inspires all. You will always be in my prayers, Love to all of the Kimes Family…

What a wonderful man. I will miss your stories of talking about celebrities and pop culture. From one daddy’s girl to another, you are in my thoughts.

I’ll never forget the day I asked him for his daughter Felicia’s hand in marriage. His response to me was full of love, kindness, and grace as he gave me his blessing. Every word he’s ever spoken to me was uplifting, encouraging, and positive. He had my full admiration and respect. I often referred to him as “Cool Hand Luke”, and watching him be a loving father to his children was a great example for a guy that grew up without a father in the home. His example as a husband and father inspired me, and he was the best father-in-law I could’ve ever asked for. Thank you for the impact you’ve had on me, but above all, for raising a wonderful daughter to be my wife and friend these past 22 years, and a fantastic mother to our children. Felicia absolutely adored you…and so did I. And we always will.
