Clarion, or Rock as he was always known, was born October 20, 1941, in Omaha, Nebraska, to Clarion (C.O.) and Frances Haynes. He was very active in Boy Scouts as a youth and achieved the rank of Eagle Scout in 1955. From there, he graduated to an Explorer Post, where he was one of the last to earn the coveted Silver Award in Boy Scouts.
Rock graduated from Benson High School in 1959 and worked for Western Electric (part of AT&T) from 1960 to 1977. He married the love of his life, Wanda Lou Striker, on July 4th, 1964, and together they had three children: Jody, Dawn, and Kyle.
In 1977, Rock relocated his family to West Point, Nebraska, to more formally pursue his interest in photography, by purchasing the local studio. As the proprietor of Haynes Portrait Gallery for the next 20 years, Rock specialized in senior portraits, weddings, and family photography. However, he also had a keen interest in wildlife and landscape photography, and he planned annual family vacations to various parts of the country in part to expand his nature photographic palette.
Within two months of moving to West Point, the local scoutmaster quit. Rock took over and remained the Scoutmaster of Troop 165 for the next 20 years, and both Jody and Kyle earned Eagle Scout under his leadership. He also led the troop on eight High Adventures, covering the entire U.S.
Rock earned his Wood Badge beads, served on Wood Badge staff, and was awarded the highest honor a Council can bestow on a volunteer—the Silver Beaver Award—in 1984. He also served as the District Roundtable Commissioner for four years, District Advancement Chairman for ten years, and District Training Chair for six years.
Rock also participated in the BSA College of Commissioner Science education program. Over a five year period, he earned his Bachelor, Masters, and ultimately his Doctorate of Commissioner Science degree—which included writing a thesis and passing his orals.
Besides donating his time to Scouts, Rock was also dedicated to his family. He and Wanda were married for 54 years, and he was extremely proud of all three of his children.
Rock also enjoyed travel and was fortunate enough to have visited all 50 states, Mexico, and a majority of the Canadian provinces. He was also able to do a number of cruises, including Alaska and a number of islands in the Caribbean. His ultimate goal was to make it to Australia. Although he never did, he lived a rich and full life, helping to shape the lives of many boys into men and leaving behind a legacy of children and two beautiful grandchildren, Krystal and Cherri-Anna.
Clarion “Rock” Haynes is preceded in death by his Brother: Charles Haynes; He is survived by his Wife of 54 years: Wanda; Children: Jody Haynes, Dawn Haynes, Kyle Haynes; Grandchildren: Krystal Briggs, Cherri-Anna Haynes; Sister: Arlene Haynes.
