Dwaine Lee (Sonny) Carlson was born June 11, 1929 on a farm near Gothenburg Nebraska to John Anders and Freeda Fern Carlson. This was also the date of the first talking movie in North Platte Nebraska.
He graduated high school in Arnold Nebraska in 1947. In 1951 Dwaine joined the Army and was stationed at Fitzsimmons Hospital in Denver Colorado. He worked in the TB Ward. Dwaine then shipped out overseas and was stationed in Landstuhl Germany and helped to set up all the furniture and equipment in the new hospital there.
After the service he attended and graduated in 1956 with a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Nebraska State Teachers College in Kearney Nebraska. Dwaine took the Civil Service Test and had the highest score in the State of Nebraska at that time. He was then employed by the US Army Corps of Engineers in the Construction Division in Omaha Nebraska. He retired after 35 years.
In his younger years, Dwaine had a little pony named Billy, and he rode him back and forth to school each day. He also did a lot of hunting on the family farm. And later, when he moved to Omaha he enjoyed traveling, golfing, biking and walking around the neighborhood, helping at Shayne’s auctions, and woodworking. Dwaine was a volunteer driver for the American Red Cross for many years. Dwaine would accompany Heidi, helping show her Percheron horses at State Fairs all over the United States. He liked to do yard work and he had a John Deere riding lawn mower that he enjoyed immensely. Often times he would meet Brett for lunch, and he enjoyed helping Shawn work on his vehicles.
Dwaine was united in marriage to Elnora Ann (Ellie) Schloatman on March 30, 1956. Dwaine and Elnora had 4 children.
Dwaine was preceded in death by his parents, a sister Donna, and a brother Jack. He leaves to mourn his wife of 63 years, two sons Shawn (Debi) and Brett (Corlis), two daughters Shayne (Mark) and Heidi (Gary), 6 grandchildren and 6 great grand children, numerous cousins, many friends, and his faithful Boston Terrier Sadie.
Visitation Friday 10:00 – 11:00 AM. Memorial service will be held at Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church on Friday April 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. Inurnment graveside services will be held in Arnold Nebraska at a later date. Memorials suggested to Kountze Memorial Lutheran Church.
