James Wendell Hurst

James Wendell Hurst was born, March 16, 1951 in Purdy, Tennessee. He is the oldest of four siblings born to his parents, James and Dorthy Hurst. He passed away on Tuesday, October 9, 2018 at the age of 67 in Omaha, Nebraska. He is preceded in death by his parents and brother Roderick Hurst.

James attended public school in Purdy, Tennessee. At the young age of 19, James moved to Omaha, Nebraska. While in Omaha, James met and fell in love with Mary Denise Hawkins and was together for 39 loving years. They shared many years of happiness before finally tying the knot in Holy Matrimony on September 2, 2004.

James worked numerous of jobs – Dailey Liquor Store, Methodist Hospital, and James retired after 25 years of being the lead supervisor from Creighton University. Seeing that James could not just sit around and totally enjoy retirement, James then worked at OPS up until he was called away from Life to Life.

James was loved by all whom crossed paths with him. He enjoyed family time, grilling where he was known as the “Grill Master” and “Meat Loaf King” by his family and friends.

James is survived by his loving and caring wife, Mary Hurst; James and Mary had a combined total of ten children. He was a great father and raised all the children as his own, Shavawn Hemphill, Andres W. Hurst, Keasha (Oliver) Hawkins-Moore, Reginald (Tammy) Hawkins, Suntria Stackins, Nakeia Hawkins, James (Veronica) Hurst, Eric Hurst, Jerry Vaughn Hurst, Jamie Hurst; James has a host of grandchildren and great grandchildren; two sisters, Sandra (Buster) Prince, Debbie Priscilla Nedd; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and close friends.

Visitation: 10:00 AM until Service time at Noon, Roeder Mortuary 50th Ames Chapel.

Interment: Mt. Hope Cemetery

    Wendell was my neighbor, he was a very friendly and hard working man. I will miss seeing him in the yard or busy in his garage. My heartfelt condolences to the family. May God keep you all uplifted knowing he is present with the Lord.
