About the man:
Ken was the second of three children born by Herbert Edward Theadore Bolas (1899 – 1975) Ruth Isabel Stone (1901 – 1976). Melford Lawrence Bolas (1928 – 2015), was his older brother and Virginia “Ginny” Bolas (1936 – ), is his younger sister. He was a veteran of the US Army, serving in Fort Lee, Virginia and in West Germany from 1951 – 1953. He worked as a Journeyman plumber at the Local 16 for thirty-seven years in Omaha, NE. His years as a plumber were interrupted by a relatively brief break to pursue an opportunity to own a business (the Arizona Barricade Company) with his brother Mel, in Tempe, AZ.
Ken had a gregarious personality. He loved to travel with his wife, Lois (1933 – 2005). They were married for fifty three years and raised four boys. Together, they traveled to forty seven counties on six continents. Ken was also a member of the Masonic Temple and the Shriners.
Ken’s love of family was always evident. Never one to withhold or sugarcoat the truth, he would always offer frank and sage advice. Ken was never afraid to give his family the tough love they sometimes needed. He’d help his kids and grandkids to a point – as he was also a firm believer that all family has the strength to stand on their own in order to recognize their own true potential.
In the spring, one would find Ken and Lois (years of birth/death) starting seeds on the family’s three season porch long before planting season. Once the summer months came, Ken would tend to his sizable garden and modest urban orchard in their backyard. Fall would reward Ken and Lois’ gardening and horticulture skills with a prolific bounty of fruits and vegetables. All of Ken’s friends and family would look forward to Lois’ jellies and preserves.
The great outdoors were a passion of Ken’s that he passed on to younger generations. Every June, he would invite friends and family go fishing with him in Saskatchewan, Canada. Only six fisherman per week are allowed on Lake Marchel, just northwest of Flin Flon. As popularity amongst family members increased to attend his annual excursions to this remote lake, Ken stayed longer and longer until he finally was fishing for up to a month. However, all of his fishing companions had to leave after a week. This ensured that he would have a new fishing party each and every week.
Ken loved to hunt pheasants and grouse with his fellow hunting enthusiasts. The group would pool their collective bounty and have an annual banquet inviting over additional friends and family to partake in the annual feast. Those present used a variety of different recipes during these banquets, which made this annual gathering an exciting time for all who attended.
Being avid fans of college football and hockey, Ken would be found during football and hockey season either watching the Huskers on television or attending a Lancers or UNO Mavericks game. Both Ken and Lois were founding members of the Blue Line Club, which helped the hockey players at UNO. After the death of his beloved wife in 2005, he created the Lois E. Bolas Scholarship, which is awarded to UNO hockey players and supports them in academic achievement.
Ultimately, Ken was a generous soul with an unbridled sense of humor. He will be fondly missed by many.
