Lynn H. Lessmann

1/21/1950 – 4/22/2019

Lynn Herbert Lessmann was born January 21, 1950 to Betty and Willis Lessmann in Wayne, Nebraska. Lynn was baptized and confirmed at Grace Lutheran Church. He graduated from Wayne Public Schools in 1969 where he played football, baseball, and basketball. He continued with basketball at Wayne State College. Lynn relished sharing these stories of past wins, losses, and lessons with his children, teammates, and others.

On May 27, 1972, Lynn married Gloria Magnuson in Concord, Nebraska. The couple lived in Omaha for a short time and then returned to northeast Nebraska to make Winside their home. Lynn worked at Winside State Bank as banker, realtor, and insurance agent for most of his career — all of which he enjoyed. Lynn was actively involved in his St. Paul’s Lutheran Church, school, youth programs, and community boards and events. After 26 years, Lynn and his wife Gloria returned to the Omaha area to Gretna, Nebraska. There he worked in real estate and started Lessmann Insurance Agency, which he ran until his retirement. Lynn was a member of several Gretna community groups and Good Shepherd Lutheran Church.

Lynn is remembered for his devout faith and his goodness as a husband, father, grandpa, brother, uncle and friend to so many. An avid sports fan and outdoorsman, Lynn enjoyed Husker football, Husker basketball, Cardinals baseball, local high school sports, golfing, fishing, hunting, and sharing that enjoyment with friends and family. In the spirit of giving, Lynn continues to give through the donation of his body to research studies of frontotemporal dementia (FTD) and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) at Mayo Clinic.

Lynn is preceded in death by his parents, Willis and Betty Lessmann, and in-laws, Glenn and Irene Magnuson and Arlen and Connie Magnuson. He is survived by his wife, Gloria Lessmann; sons, Nathan (Amber) Lessmann and Aaron (Laura) Lessmann; daughter, Susan (Ben) Wagner; Grandchildren: Caleb, Easton, Delilah, Willis, Lucy, Elsie, and James; brothers, Brendt (Debbie) Lessmann and Brian (Cindia) Lessmann; in-laws, Vel and Kathie Magnuson and Jerry and Verlene Jacoby; and many loving family and friends.

Funeral service celebration will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, May 3rd, at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 11204 S 204th St, Gretna, NE, with visitation with family an hour prior to service.

Sometimes a name from the past that you have forgotten catches your eye. Lynn worked with me at the Winside bank. I was young, trying to start a family and he always tried his hardest to keep me above water. Gloria, I have never forgotten my Saturday morning visit to find out about my job at Great Dane Trailers. You were so great, when I knocked on the door and you gave me the news,
God’s peace in these times of sorrow.

  • Pastor Martin and Yvonne Greunke says:

    Dear Gloria and family,
Yvonne and I were so shocked to see Lynn’s funeral notice in the OWH internet pages. We share in your sorrow and pray the comfort that alone comes from Jesus will sustain you in the days and months and years ago for you. We have always thought highly of you and Lynn and enjoyed knowing you through membership at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, Gretna, and in LWML activities, CPH, etc. Yvonne recently underwent a 3rd surgery for cancer just 3 weeks ago and just yesterday fell and broke her foot. But enough of that. May the Resurrection and the Life, Jesus our Lord, be with you and give you strength, hope, comfort and love.

Gloria and Family, I’m sorry for your loss. Gloria, you were one of my best instructors when you taught the first BS program in Norfolk for the Bellevue University. I always looked forward to attending, as you made it interesting for all of us. I always appreciated your perfection with spelling and punctuation too! I know how proud you were of your family, and after reading the obituary in the Norfolk News, I can see why. I wanted to extend my sympathy, and thank you for being an awesome instructor; without my degree, I would not of been able to advance, so thanks! God’s Blessings to you and your family.

I appreciated Lynn as a friend. We spent many Wednesday nights at the Wayne Audotorium competing with and against each other in the “Old Men’s Basketball League.” I knew and served with Lynn’s father in the Nebraska Army National Guard. Lynn was a good man and will be missed. My deepest sympathy to the entire family and may God Bless All of You.

Kath and I extend our sympathies, thoughts and prayers on Lynn’s death to Gloria and the rest of Lynn’s family. Lynn and Gloria are Wayne school-age friends and it was a joy to see both again last summer in Wayne after a 50 years interval. Lynn will always be remembered by me as a talented athlete, man of integrity and kind-hearted human being. His “new address” is one we all seek.

Lynn and Gloria were always real good to me while I was growing up. I remember Lynn always attending or driving us to all of our sporting events. I have some real good memories of playing some hard core basketball games in their driveway. One of my favorite things about going to their house after school or staying overnight was that awesome ho-ho cake that Gloria would make. RIP Lynn.
