July 31, 1931- January 21, 2017

Marian Elizabeth Ulmer returned to be with our Heavenly Father at the age of 85 on January 21, 2017.

Marian McClaughry was born and raised in Chicago, Illinois. After graduating from Concordia Teachers College in River Forest, Illinois, she and husband Richard Ulmer were called to Aliceville, Kansas, where he was the sole teacher at a Lutheran grade school. They were blessed with three children in Kansas – Richard Jr., Kathie and Kristine.

The family then moved to Yorktown, Iowa, where Richard Sr. was principal of St. Paul Lutheran School. In Yorktown, she was blessed with three more children – Karen, Karol and Karla – and survived a killer tornado that devastated the town. The Ulmers’ final move was to Omaha in 1967, to St. Paul Lutheran School and Church, where Marian remained a member until death.

In 1971, Marian made international news when she was transported on a toboggan through a blizzard for the birth of her seventh child, Mark. Marian served St. Paul as Kindergarten teacher as well as preschool and Kindergarten teacher at two other Omaha-area churches. She enjoyed gardening, cooking, decorating and anything which required creativity. Perhaps her greatest testament is her loving family.

Marian is survived by husband Richard and children Karla Haggar, Karen Samson, Karol Ulmer and Kathie Wolfert, all of Omaha; as well as Kris Hock of Arvada, Colorado and Richard Ulmer Jr. of San Francisco. She is also survived many grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Marian was preceded in death by son Mark, in 1986.

I am so sorry to hear of your loss, Richard and family. I remember Marion and Family visiting her mother (my mother in law) in the summer when there were just 3 little toe heads. Later times at Christmas, when her dad would take them shopping for Christmas outfits. Marion was always very sweet, and a true christian. Seeing her photo, she still had that sweet smile. My sympathies to Mr. Ulmer and his family. The Ulmer’s moved to Aliceville, KS right out of CTC and he was my first through third grade teacher in a one room school. He was an outstanding teacher and Richard and Marian were good friends of my parents who introduced them to rural life. I hope I have the opportunity to visit Richard on an upcoming visit to Nebraska.

Blessed are they that mourn for they shall be comforted. Matt 5:4.

My sympathies to the Ulmer family. So sorry for your loss. Mrs Ulmer was a pleasant, nice, respectful lady. I remember her as my Girl Scout leader with my mom at St. Paul’s. Mrs Ulmer served beside her husband when he was the Principal. very dedicated to her work as a teacher at St. Paul’s. Will remember her friendship with my mom when I was in grade school with her children. She will be missed. St. Paul’s was a great school with Ulmers dedication….will always remember those days and mrs ulmer……my sympathies…

Sorry Mr. Ulmer for your loss. Also. I do know I used the wrong word. Should have been hear.

  • Gail Mier says:

Sorry to here of Mrs. Ulmer’s passing, but happy for her reaching her heavenly home. Many fond memories of the family from their many years in Yorktown.

  • David Doroh says:

The Ulmers came to St. Paul Lutheran, Omaha, just as I graduated from there. So I did not have Mr. Ulmer for my teacher/principal. However, over the years we enjoyed getting to know the Ulmers while participating in choir and other church activities. My parents loved the Ulmers and their family. It seems everyone looked to them as a fine example of a Christian family.

Years later, when I had returned to college, one of the projects I had was to interview a teacher from our past. Unfortunately, by this time most of my elementary school teachers were no longer with us. But since Mr. Ulmer was my sister’s teacher, I asked if I could interview him. I ended up with an interview that included antidotes about Mrs. Ulmer. It included stories about her time at CTC, River Forest, and Aliceville, Kansas.

Mrs. Ulmer was one of the nicest and sweetest Christian people that I have had the privilege to meet and know.

I remember her very well. Her husband was my 8th grade teacher and principal. Loved them both. William Stuckwisch
