Merlin “Mert” Johnson

Merlin “Mert” Johnson was born on 1/3/30 in Mondamin, Iowa to Harold and Edna Johnson. He grew up in Mondamin with his 4 siblings, Dwaine, Quinton, Janet and Stan. Mert helped his parents at the US Post Office, worked at the local gas station, and Keith’s Grocery Store. He played basketball at Mondamin High School where he graduated in 1947.

Following high school, Mert served in the Iowa National Guard and the United States Air Force until 1952. Mert returned to Omaha and worked in group insurance at Mutual of Omaha for 35 years. Following his retirement from Mutual, Mert worked as an independent insurance agent for many years. After leaving the insurance business Mert worked at Von Maur Department store with several of his golfing buddies. Mert enjoyed gardening, golfing with El Dees, Keno outings and horse racing.

In 1953, Mert married Alice Manguson and they had 4 children, Carol, Tom, Pam and Linda. They lived in Council Bluffs before moving to Omaha in 1963. Fishing trips to Minnesota, traveling to Dayton, Iowa and Amarillo, Texas to visit family, and a trip to Goodrich Dairy for a chocolate malt were all activities Mert enjoyed with his family. He had 3 grandchildren and 6 great grandchildren. Mert was a loving man who was dedicated to his family and friends.

Merlin was preceded in death by: Son: Thomas Johnson; Daughter: Pamela Johnson; Brothers: Quintin Johnson & Dwaine Johnson; He is survived by Wife of 64 years: Alice Johnson; Daughters: Linda Johnson, Carol (Lynn) Rice; Grandchildren: Erica (Vince) Bosscher, Siri (Ryan) Morken, John (Nicole) Rice; Great-grandchildren: Maria, Moses, Louis, & Georgia Bosscher, Evan & Jake Morken; Brother: Stan Johnson; Sister: Jan Moore; Sisters-in-Law: Helen Martin, Marjorie Udall; Many Nieces, Nephews Cousins, and Friends.

Visitation Wednesday 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Roeder Mortuary 2727 N. 108th Street Omaha, Nebraska; funeral Service: 10:00 AM Thursday (3/22/2018) at Maplewood United Methodist Church 3535 Maplewood Blvd Omaha, Nebraska; Interment Evergreen Memorial Park Omaha, Nebraska
