Nora M. Newton – Lewis

Nora Newton-Lewis was born to parents Percy and Dorothy Jenkins on September 19, 1946 in Omaha, Nebraska. She accepted Christ at an early age. As a child, she attended St Benedict the Moor and Sacred Heart churches. Later she became a member at Mount Moriah Missionary Baptist Church.

Nora attended St Benedict and Druid Hill elementary schools and graduated from Central High School. Not only was she a member of Y-Teens, but she participated in the Contemporaries Drum and Lyre Corps. Nora later attended the Nebraska School of Hair Design, and upon graduation she was hired as an instructor of cosmetology. After several years, due to arthritis, Nora could no longer instruct hair design. She became a radiology imaging associate for the University of Nebraska Medical Center, where she retired after 32years of service. Nora was a dedicated employee who hardly every missed work.

Nora loved serving in the community as a member and former officer of the Urban League of Nebraska Guild. She also loved gospel music and cooking. she was known for her ham, potato salad, peach cobbler and spicy greens. She was also known for her warm and loving personality and loved to make others laugh.

Nora was also faithful in service to church. She almost never missed a service until she was too ill to attend. She was a Past Mission President and usher for Mt. Moriah, served in the New Era Women’s Auxiliary, visited the sick, and cooked meals to be distributed during the holidays.

Nora was united in marriage to Willie J. Newton. Later in life, she married Thomas Q. Lewis. Nora loved her family. She worked tirelessly as a provider and believed family should be there for one another. She was dedicated to all her family. She never forgot a birthday or anniversary.

Nora was cared for in the home of her daughter Natisha and grandson Bernard, until she was called home. She was preceded in death by her parents, granddaughter Natisha Newton and the true love of her life, Thomas McCowin. She leaves to cherish fond memories her five children: Percy (LaTasha) Newton, Sr. Carl (Heather) Newton, Brian (Fiancee Linda) Newton, Natisha Odjidja and Nathan (Jennifer) Newton; two sisters: Dr Carol (Dr Henry) Jackson and Tina Jenkins; grandchildren Percy Newton jr, Desy’ree Newton, Alexandria Newton, Bernard Odjidja III, Nariya Newton, Hunter Newton, Neela Newton, Brison Newton, Jasmine Edwards, and Jakobe Edwards; those she loved like her children: Brian Dean, Pam McCowin0-hughs, Jackie McCowin-Jones, J. Corey McCowin and Tammy McCowin-King; long-life time devoted friend: Johnetta Coffiel-Bennett: Godfather Elder Larry (Karen) Brooks Sr; special aunt Patricia Hayes; nieces Stacy Jackson and Destynie (Min J. Michael II) Sewell; and a host of other relatives and friends.
