Richard George Hulsey, 68, of Omaha, NE, died unexpectedly April 11, 2016.
Rich was born May 27, 1947 in Hammond, Ind., the son of Jean and the late George Hulsey. He spent most of his youth in Crown Point and Lowell, met his high school sweetheart Linda Brewer at 4-H while judging legumes, and they married just before Christmas in 1967. After graduating from Lowell High School he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees from Purdue University.
Rich and Linda celebrated the birth of their first child, Amy, shortly before his service in the U.S. Army (1970-1972). After the birth of their second daughter Elizabeth, Rich and Linda raised their family in Poughkeepsie, N.Y. while he worked at DeLaval Separator and then Pittsburgh, Penn., where he worked at Dravo Corporation.
After his retirement, Rich worked for Nutrition Services in Omaha Public Schools until his death, most recently at Davis Middle School. An avid model train collector and builder, he traveled around the Midwest for train conferences and also volunteered as the train engineer in summer months at Omaha’s Henry Doorly Zoo.
Rich was a loving and devoted husband and father, who was active in church throughout his life, enjoyed Bible study and spending time with his family and friends.
Rich is survived by his wife, Linda, daughter Amy and her husband John Kelly, daughter Liz and her husband Rodney Arcaro; grandchildren Chelsea Ann Kelly, a graduate student at George Mason University, and Colin Gaynor Kelly, a Midshipman at the United States Naval Academy. He also leaves behind his mother, Jean Hulsey, and many loving brothers, sisters, nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his father, George Hulsey, brother William Hulsey and nephew DJ Hulsey.
VISITATION Friday, April 15, 2016 from 5-8pm and FUNERAL SERVICE Saturday, April 16, 2016 at 11am with all services at Roeder Mortuary 108th Street Chapel.
Donations can be made in his memory to Davis Middle School, who plans to create a model train club in remembrance of Rich and/or the Henry Doorly Zoo Railroad Contribution.
Linda, I was so saddened to hear about this. Alicia and I are praying for your family and are asking God to be your strength through this incredibly difficult time. Please let us know if there’s anything we can do for you.
